Distracted Driving is a Growing Threat

Nearly everyone today realizes the serious problem posed by distracted driving and the potential for tragic consequences. Cellular phone usage contributes to 636,000 car crashes a year and young drivers need to understand the dangers they face everyday. It’s not just talking on the phone - text messaging behind the wheel is proven to be even more dangerous.

2,600 Deaths Anually, 300,000 Injuries

We are doing our part through Wireless Wizdom - a free safe driving awareness program sponsored by Wireless Wizard and conducted through the cooperation of neighboring high schools and colleges.

Our message is simple: “Safety is your most important call” The National Safety Council states that there are three primary ways to increase safety: education, technology and legislation. Our focus is on providing technology and education about risks and the proper way to use hands-free equipment. Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds.

Sadly, 40% of teens say they have been in a car when the driver put everyone in danger by using a cellular phone. Another scary fact? Research shows that talking on a cellular phone is similar in danger to driving with a .08 blood alcohol level, which is considered legally drunk in Connecticut.

Texting while driving increases the risk of a crash by eight times, double the risk of making a phone call. Still, 48% of 12 – 17 year-olds say they have been in a car while the driver was text messaging. The problem is this. First, drivers must take their eyes off the road while dialing or text messaging. Second, people become so absorbed in their conversations that their ability to concentrate is severely impaired.

It all adds up to 636,000 car crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths attributed to cellular phone use each year. Everyone is at risk. For every accident that results in the death of a 15, 16 or 17-year old, an average of two other motorists or pedestrians are killed We feel Wireless Wizdom is a worthy initiative that can help save lives-as of 2009 we’ve reached out to more than 11,000 students in Connecticut.
